Changing How We Pray

Much has been written in recent years about the forthcoming revisions regarding the language we use in the liturgy.  Concerns have been expressed arising from the perception that the Church is looking for a way to somehow reverse the liturgy that was mandated the Second Vatican Council in 1963.  However, upon review, one can easily see that the changes deal strictly with the translation of the Mass, not the ritual for celebrating Eucharist; only the translation of the Latin will be changing.  These changes will take affect the 1st Sunday of Advent.  To find out more information about these revisions, five 90 minute sessions will be offered to answer your questions.  Please mark your calendar and plan to attend a session in Morris Hall on one of the following dates:

Monday – Nov. 7 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Sunday – Nov. 13 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Monday – Nov. 14 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Saturday – Nov. 19 3:00 pm – 4 30 p

A votive is an offering on behalf of a person, need or cause. A votive candle is a method for making this offering. The candle is a symbol of hope in Christ but the lighting of the candle is to represent a self giving sacrifice. It is a giving of ourselves to God as we ask God to consider our plea for a person or cause. It is a method of demonstrating the seriousness of our faith and our dedication to God by making a sacrifice.

This week we will be dedicating two sets of votive candles to be placed beneath the paintings of Santo Nino and Our Lady of Guadalupe. There is a suggested donation of $2 for each candle lit. The net proceeds will be utilized by the Social Concerns Committee on behalf of the needy. Thus your candle will represent your sacrifice to the poor on behalf of your concern.

The lighting of the candle should be accompanied by prayer. There are kneelers nearby, in front of the tabernacle but the prayer may also be offered from a pew or while standing. Again, this is a demonstration of our faith in God as we not only offer our sacrifice but our prayers on behalf of our concern. We are also reaffirming to ourselves the central place of our faith in our lives.

Thinking about separation or divorce? Is your marriage or that
of a relative or friend heading for divorce? Do you know how
to save that marriage? Or do you feel helpless? Retrouvaille is
designed to help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps
spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment
that originally brought them together. The program is highly
successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing reconciliation
to couples who have already separated or divorced.

A retreat is a powerful, personal experience. People’s lives are
changed in a retreat. A retreat is receiving the gift of time to be
with the Lord. Gifting yourself with time to rest, reflect, and
pray in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere is an important part of your
spiritual life. It allows you to separate yourself from your daily
life and ponder the ways God is at work in your life. The theme
for this year’s retreat is “Let us Go up to the House of the
Lord: Dwelling in the Heart of God.”

The topic for our next Men’s Group Meeting on Wednesday,
September 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Clare Room is “Cleansing
our Home from Porn.”
Pornography is a serious problem especially among males. It is readily
available even when we are not looking for it. It is very harmful
not only to us but also in its effects on our wife and family.
We will watch a 20-minute video on the subject and then discuss
our own encounters with it and methods to eliminate  it.

All men are invited.
